Informed Sauce Podcast Preview One – remembering the BBC Radio 2 ‘Elvis’ promo

The new-look Informed Sauce website will also feature a magazine-style podcast with a regular group of contributors and a rolodex-full of guests. The first programme will appear in early May..

Standalone feature will punctuate the regular mixture of opinions, insights and conversation. To give you an idea of what to expect from these features, here’s the first of two from the archives.

In 2006, Radio 2 commissioned Red Bee Media to create a TV promo. Producer Edel Erickson and director Steve Cope came up with the idea of a 60 second slot in which Elvis Presley is imagined introducing an all-star band of musicians and singers to accompany him on stage, The band that never was.

This is the story of how they made it, with the help of Blue Post Production’s VFX artist Chris Mortimer on creating the illusion of the band that never was, Grand Central’s Munzie Thind on the music and the unusual experience of working with a voice artist to recreate Elvis’s voice, and editor Tim Hardy, who reveals the identity of one character who didn’t make the cut and the man who surprised him with a smile.

This podcast originally appeared in the upclose&digital series.
