Fairlight CMI: “the Mother of all digital audio workstations”

With everything that’s going on pandemic-wise and as we all try to shrug our way back into ‘work mode’ here’s a bit of techie light relief.

In the video above from 1980, Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument) co-designer Peter Vogel demonstrates the Mother of all digital audio workstations on ABC-TV Australia’s ‘This Week’, while composer Michael Carlos is shown playing his theme to ABC-TV sci-fi series “Timewarp”. for context, this groundbreaking piece of kit cost AUD$20,000 at the time, over AUD$90,000 in today’s money.
