If you have seen the latest (final?) instalment of the Indiana Jones tales, you’ll be aware that it’s about a race to prevent the Antikythera Mechanism falling into the wrong hands and really, really bad stuff happening.
The device, which was discovered in the wreckage of a sunken ship off the coast of Greece in 1901, is often considered the world’s oldest known analog computer, dating back to approximately 150-100 BCE. It features a complex arrangement of precisely cut gears, all designed to track celestial movements, predict lunar and solar eclipses, and chart the positions of planets.
