As parts of the world return to something resembling normality, post-pandemic, as individuals, employers and employees, we are all being urged to take cyber security more seriously. But why?
To put it mildly, ransomware attacks are a serious threat to both national security and economic stability and failure to take action can have very serious and damaging consequences. Ransomware-as-a-Service is now a thing and are beginning to pick out more vulnerable targets such as schools and healthcare providers.
If you remain unconvinced that this is something you should be addressing, here are some sobering stats from Forbes contributor Mark Nevins:
- Since 2016, over 4,000 ransomware attacks have occurred daily in the U.S.
- Experts estimate that a ransomware attack will occur every 11 seconds in 2021. (Cybercrime Magazine)
- The average downtime a company experiences after a ransomware attack is 21 days. (Coveware)
- In 2020, ransomware payments were 7% of all funds received by cryptocurrency addresses. (Chainalysis)
- Damages related to cybercrimes are expected to increase to $6 trillion by 2021. (Cybersecurity Ventures)
