Lawyers slap injunction on ransomware attackers

4 New Square chambers, which was recently hit hit by a ransomware attack, has obtained a privacy injunction from the High Court demanding that the person or persons “responsible for engaging in a cyber-attack on [the barristers] on or about 12 June 2021 and/or who is threatening to release the information thereby obtained” do not share any data they may have stolen. Legal experts have questioned the point of taking action against a group that is outside the jurisdiction of the English courts. To quote The Register, which reported the story:

“It is very difficult to see what effect, if any, a civil non-disclosure order will have on a ransomware gang potentially based in a hostile foreign country – especially when such criminals attack multiple countries’ critical national infrastructure with apparent impunity.”

Ransomware gangs are notoriously difficult to track down and bring to book, so it will be interesting to see how these legal experts, which includes an IT dispute practice, fares.
