Labour Party data handler hit by “cyber incident”

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) are jointly investigating a “cyber incident” at a third party firm that handles the Labour Party’s data involving “a significant quantity” of information relating to party members which was “rendered inaccessible on their systems”. The Labour Party and the National Crime Agency are also participating in the investigation.

“We are aware of this issue and are working with the Labour Party to fully investigate and mitigate any potential impact. We would urge anyone who thinks they may have been the victim of a data breach to be especially vigilant against suspicious emails, phone calls or text messages and to follow the steps set out in our data breaches guidance.”

NCSC statement

No information about the third party in question or the scale or nature of the compromised data has been revealed other than that it related to “members, registered and affiliated supporters, and other individuals who have provided their information”. The BBC’s cyber reporter Joe Tidy believes this has all the hallmarks of a ransomware attack.
