TIME magazine has included NVIDIA’s much lauded Instant NeRF on its list of Best Inventions of 2022. NeRFs (Neural Radiance Fields) are neural networks that take the camera pose from a set of 2D images and use spatial location and volumetric rendering to conjure a 3D representation of the scene in seconds. Prior to Instant NeRF, achieving this would require many hours of render time. Now, the longer you leave it to work its magic, the more detailed the result.
Instant NeRF won the prestigious SIGGRAPH 2022 Technical Papers Award for researchers Thomas Müller, Alex Evans, Christoph Schied, and Alexander Keller for their paper Instant Neural Graphics Primitives with a Multiresolution Hash Encoding.
