Boasting the same LED screen technology John Favreau pioneered on The Mandalorian, Orca Studios has opened in Spain with the support of Epic Games and in collaboration with production company Kinolux.
Using this state-of-the-art system, exterior or interior images powered by video game PC engines and that adjust in sync with camera movement are shown on an array of screens to create a seamless high-resolution , photorealistic backdrop.
The business is based in tax-friendly Gran Canaria, where high-res video assets are originated. These assets can also then be sent to other suitably equipped studio set-ups anywhere in the world, including Orca’s own in Madrid.
“There are so many things that go against the creativity of movie making. Virtual production with a LED volume helps overcome those issues. It empowers filmmakers, allowing for far greater flexibility and control. Besides the obvious uses for sci-fi/fantasy environments, this technology is accessible for smaller productions. We can avoid small locations where a director is only going to shoot half a day or time spent at certain locations that are very expensive or have limitations like a hotel or hospital, where you can create your own.”
