The State Of Virtual Production 2023 – a survey of 800 film industry professionals

Together with a group of colleagues, Forbes contributor Shane Snow surveyed 800 individuals in the film industry to gauge their reactions to the growing use of LED screens and in-camera visual effects as an alternative to green screen and shooting on location. The result was a 25-page report called The State of Virtual Production 2023.

The first finding was that about half of the people surveyed declared themselves “excited” about the rise of this new technology, while 22.3% remain “skeptical” overall about the march of this new technology paradigm.

Amongst those with a year of virtual production experience under their belts, under 20% of the total group surveyed, the enthusiasm rises and scepticism reduces significantly.

Amongst those with three or more years of experience, only just over 10% of the people surveyed, the results are, well, starkly positive.

75% said they anticipated doing at least some work using virtual production technology in 2023.

The same percentage said they would be doing more virtual production work this year than last, while 57% said they anticipated doing “a lot more”.

There’s a fairly even split on the question of whether this new method of filmmaking produces better results than more traditional methods.

The same goes for whether it is more or less technically difficult than traditional methods of production. The suggestion here is that people are still waiting to see how things go for early adopters before fully taking the plunge themselves, especially in terms of cost, complexity and, ultimately, quality, but, as is always the case with new and disruptive technologies, it is only a matter of time before the next wave of adopters arrives.
