ChatGPT has passed a Google exam that involves answering mainly technical questions that would see it hired for a Level-3 engineering position commanding a salary of around $183,000. The experiment using the company’s interview process was done as part of the their recent testing of a number of AI chatbots. The exercise raises the question that a powerful chatbot can transform not just Google but the engineering jobs behind it.
ChatGPT can identify and fix buggy code and it’s already being used to search for coding solutions on popular sites like StackOverflow, but when asked if it would ever replace software engineers, it replied, “No, ChatGPT will not replace software engineers. ChatGPT is a tool that can assist with certain tasks, but it cannot completely replace the creativity, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking abilities of a human software engineer. Additionally, ChatGPT requires human supervision and direction to operate effectively”.
