Third North East England university hack in a year paralyses Sunderland

The University of Sunderland has been the victim of “a major cyber attack” that has affected email, telephone and IT systems. Vice-chancellor Sir David Bell has admitted “we don’t know” when a fix will be found. In a video message on a temporary website Sir David described the attack as “particularly upsetting” and said “we are working as hard we can to resolve the situation”.

The university has enlisted cyber security experts to help resolve the situation and ensure students’ learning is not interrupted and that the data the university holds is both safe and accessible.

This is not the first time the North East region’s higher education establishments have been hacked like this. Both Newcastle and Northumbria Universities were targeted in September 2020, prompting the National Cyber Security Centre (NSCS) to urge all similar establishments to take appropriate action to protect themselves.

A temporary website is providing students and staff with updates while the matter is resolved.
